Boiler breakdown: what to check before you call

By FixNow24

The absolute rule when you smell gas, the four simple checks that solve half the breakdowns, and what the heating engineer expects from you on arrival.

A smell of gas: you try nothing

If you smell gas, do not touch any switch, do not turn on a lamp or use a phone in the room, open the windows, close the gas valve if you can reach it safely, leave the home and call the gas emergency number of your network operator.

That is the one situation where FixNow24 deliberately refuses your request: the app blocks the estimate and the payment, and shows only the safety instructions and that emergency number. A smell of gas belongs to the emergency services, not to a scheduled repair.

Four checks that are often enough

First write down the error code shown on the boiler: it is the most useful piece of information you can pass on, and it often points the diagnosis in the right direction before the professional even arrives.

Then check the water pressure on the gauge. A needle that is too low stops the boiler from starting, and topping up is sometimes enough, provided you close the filling valve properly afterwards.

Check that the thermostat really is calling for heat, batteries included, and that the boiler still has power: a tripped breaker or an unplugged socket explains a surprising number of calls. Finally check that the gas valve is open and that nothing is blocking the ventilation of the room.

What the engineer does, and what it costs

On FixNow24 you describe the fault, the indicative range for the work appears between €8.48 and €1,908.00 incl. VAT at the 6 % rate, or between €9.68 and €2,178.00 incl. VAT at the 21 % rate, depending on the part concerned, and you pay a €35.00 call-out fee to send the request. That fee covers the journey and the diagnosis.

On site the engineer identifies the cause, selects the VAT rate he is responsible for, then enters a firm price that you accept in the app before he starts. If a part is missing, he offers a separate additional quote.

A repair does not replace the compulsory periodic service of your boiler, which remains a separate obligation with its own certificate. The two go together: regular servicing clearly reduces the number of breakdowns in the middle of winter.

Prepare the access and the paperwork before he arrives as well. Clear the space around the boiler, get out the service log book and the latest certificate if you have them, and locate the gas meter and the fuse box. If the boiler is recent, the fault may fall under the manufacturer’s warranty or under an existing service contract: say so, and an honest professional will point you towards that route rather than charge for an avoidable visit. While you wait, close unused rooms and block draughts: the home loses its heat more slowly that way.
