The trip switch keeps cutting out: understand and react safely
By FixNow24
Why a residual current device trips, how to find the appliance at fault without resetting endlessly, and when it becomes necessary to call an electrician.
What a residual current device protects
The device compares the current entering your installation with the current leaving it. As soon as a small part goes elsewhere, through a person or a damp appliance for instance, it cuts out. So it is not a breakdown: it is a protection that has done its job.
Do not confuse it with the smaller breakers lined up beside it, which each protect one circuit against overload. When the main device drops, a whole part of the home goes dark at once, which explains the feeling of a general power cut.
Finding the cause without resetting endlessly
Resetting ten times in a row teaches you nothing and wears the protection out. Do the opposite: switch all the small breakers off, reset the main device, then bring the circuits back one by one. The one that makes everything drop again points to the area concerned.
In that area, unplug appliances one at a time: washing machine, water heater, fridge, garden extension lead, outdoor light. Damp is the most common cause, often after a leak, heavy rain or a cleaning session.
If everything still drops with all circuits switched off, the problem sits upstream, in the board itself. Leave the installation off and call an electrician: that part is not something to handle yourself.
When to call an electrician
Call without waiting if you notice a burning smell, if a socket has blackened, if the board is getting hot, or if the device drops again immediately with no appliance plugged in. Those signs are not fixed by resetting.
On FixNow24 you describe the symptom in a few words and the indicative range for the work appears immediately, between €8.48 and €1,908.00 incl. VAT at the 6 % rate, or between €9.68 and €2,178.00 incl. VAT at the 21 % rate, depending on how much fault finding is needed. You pay a €35.00 call-out fee to send the request.
The electrician first restores the power safely, then explains what he found. Replacing a whole fuse box is not an emergency job: he will explain the principle, but it will be done at a planned appointment.
Note down as well what you observed before the cut: an appliance just plugged in, an unusual smell, a sharp click at the board, recent water ingress. Those details are worth more than a long story and guide the fault finding. On the other hand, do not put a suspect appliance back into service just to see what happens: if it caused a current leak, it will cause one again. Unplug it, set it aside and mention it to the professional. If you rent, tell the landlord: some work on the fixed installation is his responsibility.
